6 + 1 Writing Traits

The past week our focus was on the 6 + 1 writing traits with the acronym V.I.P.  C.O.W.S, meaning Voice, Ideas, Presentation, Conventions, Organization, word choice, and Sentence fluency. Looking back to my years at the primary level I was only familiar with about 2 of the writing traits, now I can say after the week, that I am aware of the writing traits but need to continue my reading to broaden my knowledge of the writing traits. So that I can be more creative and confident in my writing letting my individuality and voice be shown in my writing.

Thinking back to some of the books I have read, I can now see the writing traits had a part to play in its development, the way in which the author weaves the story together keeping me longing for more, the presentation and the author's voice all held my attention captivating me.  What will stay with me is the strategy our lecturer used to find out about the writing traits. Groups were asked to research and present one trait which was done in a very creative manner.  I will use that strategy moving forward with my students.

  2. So Miss Noel, evidently you were reading books that were dipped in the writing traits, that's why you were so mesmerized by the literature. A perfect blend of the traits made for quite an appetizing read didn't it?
While I believe that the traits are all equally important, some times thinking about them individually, I can't help but feel like some of the traits add so much more life to the literature than others.
For example; word choice, to me choosing the right word; describes a situation perfectly, sets the right mood/emotion, paints the scenario accurately and allows the reader to be emersed.
