Writing traits

Phew! So, guys, the end is near, and I must say what a semester it was. The journey getting here was a long one from ‘’all about books’’ to the writing process, narrative writing (exploding a moment) writing workshop where we share and learn from each other. 6 + 1 writing traits, persuasive writing. All these writing activities took us to this moment, where we can utilize the strategies learned in our writing and our classroom. As the curtain comes down on this writing journey, I must express my gratitude for being a part of such an informative and practical walk. A walk that leads to analyzing writing done by a child. This concept was very new to me as previously if given a piece of writing done by a child I would read try to correct and edit. however, I learned that students' writing had to be critically analyzed using specific writing traits such as voice, ideas, presentation, sentence fluency, word choice, and organization (VIPCOWS) the acronym to remember the traits by. I c...

Persuasive Writing continues

Hey, my fellow bloggers. Have you felt overworked lately? Well, I have, for the first time this semester felt lost, frustrated, and alone. I have not totally recovered from that state, however, there is no one to blog on my behalf so here goes.      We continued to look at persuasive writing and were placed in groups according to our topics while Mrs. Laz provided support and guidance to us. Some person's topics were approved during that session while others shared their topics, thesis statements, and supporting points to get positive feedback. The hook of the piece. Your stance and supporting details were all aspects of a persuasive piece that were reiterated. Belfon and Lecia do hope you have some additional details to share that I may have neglected to input. Awaiting your response, I do hope you guys are in a better frame of mind than me.

Persuasive Writing

Hello there my fellow bloggers,  I trust that all is well on your end. As we delved into persuasive writing the first thing, I asked myself was will I be able to convincingly persuade someone into an alternative point of view to what they believe.  After looking at the motive of writing a particular piece I convinced myself that with the information received on formulating my thesis statement, choosing my stance, the topic sentence, and supporting my stance. What stuck with me is: -         the purpose or main idea one wants to convey -         understanding my audience, their values, interests, and concerns. -         Establishing credibility and trustworthiness by providing evidence and demonstrating my commitment to honesty and transparency. -         Emotional appeal, connecting with my audience on an emotional level usin...

6 + 1 Writing Traits

The past week our focus was on the 6 + 1 writing traits with the acronym V.I.P.  C.O.W.S, meaning Voice, Ideas, Presentation, Conventions, Organization, word choice, and Sentence fluency. Looking back to my years at the primary level I was only familiar with about 2 of the writing traits, now I can say after the week, that I am aware of the writing traits but need to continue my reading to broaden my knowledge of the writing traits. So that I can be more creative and confident in my writing letting my individuality and voice be shown in my writing. Thinking back to some of the books I have read, I can now see the writing traits had a part to play in its development, the way in which the author weaves the story together keeping me longing for more, the presentation and the author's voice all held my attention captivating me.  What will stay with me is the strategy our lecturer used to find out about the writing traits. Groups were asked to research and present one trait...

Sharing and Learning from each other.

Oh! how quickly time passes when you are actively engaged. our week although it was very short was packed with information about the writing workshop and key components such as teaching time, writing time, sharing time, and conferencing time. Giving and getting feedback as we shared our narrative piece with a partner was the highlight of my week along with working in small groups. The different viewpoints and perspectives of each other would help improve our writing and bring clarity to certain aspects of our narrative piece. As we brainstorm in our groups we learn from each other as we share and collaborate. working in groups as we go through the writing process is something I will definitely implement in my classroom as it will cater to shy students while also building collaboration.  Additionally, we saw the positive effect of sharing when one of our colleagues shared how to make changes to our blogs to improve their functionality and ease the stress some of us seem to hav...

Narrative Writing ( Exploding a Moment)

Sunday 22 October, 2023. what a week that was!  ''Exploding a moment'' a new phrase i learned during class this past week and my lecturer really exploded the moment in getting us to understand that phrase. watching movies and reading books to me didn't do any justice to understanding and putting into context that phrase. It was the explanation by our lecturer breaking down each step, using videos, stories, having grand discussions with questions and explanation that aid in my understanding of that phrase is what stood out to me.   I am extremely grateful for being present in class this past week as i would have missed lots of important information such as sensory details, the feelings and emotions of the characters that aids in exploding the moment as we have seen in the video of the flight attendant shown in class. watching that video cemented what our lecturer have been saying and got me to look at my first draft with a very critical eye as it was lacking that ex...

Narrative Writing

Hey Guys! I don't know about you but I feel so overwhelmed. with so much to do and so little time, that I am late in blogging. nevertheless, as we began narrative writing I came to the realization that I can't remember being taught or engaging in that type of writing at the primary level.  As a teacher and a teacher trainee what stood out to me was the story grammar, the characters the story is about, the setting where the story is taking place, the problem the events, road blocks and twists, and the resolution of how was the problem solved. I will ensure that on returning to my classroom my students are given the proper guidance before they begin to write their story. There will be teaching time, writing time, and a time to share. I will give options in choosing topics and ensure students brainstorm and write down their ideas. I definitely don't want my students in the next few years to be saying they were never taught how to do narrative writing, so I will put into pract...
